What causes sun or age spots (Hyperpigmentation)?
Hyperpigmentation means coloring. Skin pigmentation disorders affect the color of your skin. Your skin gets its color from a pigment called melanin. Special cells in the skin make melanin. When these cells become damaged or unhealthy, it affects melanin production. Sun spots, liver spots, freckles and other unwanted pigmentation are often associated with skin ageing and over exposure to the sun or sunbeds.
From the age of about 40 the skin is less able to regenerate from sun exposure and age spots start to appear. Pigmentation can be caused due to genetics, sun exposure, stress, fluctuating hormones caused by pregnancy and or birth control pause, insulin resistance, damage to the skin due to injury or overly aggressive skin care treatment or frequent use of hair dyes.
Generally these age spots pose no health risk, however they can be unsightly and create a patchy, less youthful appearance.
